Port Loko is a district about 40 miles from Sierra Leone's capital and is made up of several small, remote villages. The 22,000 residents that make up Port Loko's population cope with some of the poorest living conditions in the world. According to a 2004 United Nations.
Report, Port Loko has the highest contribution to Sierra Leone's total extreme poverty. (United Nations, 2004)
In 2007, Pastor Dayo Pratt went into this forsaken area to give its people hope for the future. The people of Port Loko have met Pastor Pratt with great acceptance. In less than three years, the Port Loko church has become refuge to over 100 residents.
With Into-Africa's help, Pastor Pratt has been able to secure land and begin construction on a building to operate in. The Port Loko congregation needs just $2,500 more to complete their building. In the meantime, the Port Loko residents have tried to make do with the unfinished building, which lacks windows or doors.
Raising the small amount needed to complete the building is Into-Africa's initial focus. It is the hope of Into-Africa to eventually setup a water filtration system on the church's property, which would help mitigate the physical needs for the entire community. The cost of bringing clean water to the Port Loko community would be about $28,000.
